DROUGHT OF ORDER

- BY JOHN RICHARDSON

FEAR of losing is killing the Premier League, according to one of English football’s great entertainers.

Ex-england star Terry Mcdermott was part of the free-scoring Liverpool sides of the 70s and 80s and then Kevin Keegan’s No.2 when Newcastle were thrilling crowds in the 1990s.

“Now it’s all about being frightened to lose,” said the former goal-scoring midfielder. And the figures bear him out. Last weekend six of the 10 Prem games ended 1-0 and 11 of the 20 clubs average a goal a game – or less.

“Because of the money on offer in the Premier League, the ambition of nearly every club is to reach 40 points,” said Mcdermott.

“That is the be-all and end-all for the likes of Southampton and West Brom. As far as the fans are concerned, they are left with boring games – and they are losing out.”
