SOUTHGATE ‘HEADACHE’

HARRY MAGUIRE hopes that he has given England manager Gareth Southgate a selection headache.

The 24-year-old Leicester central defender made an impressive debut at Wembley (above), and said: “All the boys here think they should be at international level.

“Don’t get me wrong, we have a lot of players that are injured and I am sure they will come back into the next few camps.

“But the boys playing at the moment are trying our best to give the manager a headache for selection when it comes to the World Cup.”

And, to back up his argument, he listed the rookies who have given Southgate food for thought.

He said: “Jordan Pickford pulled off some great saves, Ruben Loftus-cheek was the best player on the pitch, Joe Gomez came in and did well, and big Tammy Abraham had his chance and could maybe have scored.

“I have had a whirlwind of a year. The worst thing was to get relegated from the Premier League with Hull. Then, I joined a great club like Leicester and got my first England call-up – probably the proudest moment of my life.”

He said of boss Southgate: “He told us before the game that we were playing a good team, but he wanted us to be brave – brave on the ball.”
