Giant ‘flying bum’ airship is wrecked

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

Crash scene THE world’s longest aircraft has crashed just hours after a successful test flight.

Airlander 10 – a 300ftlong hybrid airship dubbed the “flying bum” – is thought to have slipped its moorings yesterday.

No one was aboard but two staff members were treated for cuts and bruises. Police closed roads over fears of fuel leaks at Cardington airfield in Bedfordshire.

The €28million aircraft crashed on a previous test flight in August last year.

Owner Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd hopes to carry tourists on luxury air cruises to the North Pole.

It said: “We are testing a brand new type of aircraft. Incidents of this nature can occur during this phase of development.”
