July 1972: Released for secret peace talks with the British government. 1973-1977:

Peace talks fail and Adams is imprisoned again. 1978: Elected vice president MDE0T6AICN­AEPD-1972 of Sinn Fein. 1983: Elected president of Sinn Fein.

1983-1992: Elected MP for West Belfast, but never takes his seat to avoid taking the obligatory oath of loyalty to the British queen. 1984: Shot and seriously wounded during an assassinat­ion attempt. 1988: Begins talks with SDLP leader John Hume. January 1994: Granted his first US visa. August 1994:

April 1998: The Good Friday Agreement is signed. June 1998: Elected to the new Northern Ireland Assembly. 2011: Elected to the Dail. April 30-May 4, 2014: Adams is held for questionin­g in connection with the 1972 IRA abduction and slaying of Jean Mcconville.

May 19, 2015: Meets Prince Charles. This is the first meeting between a member of the British royal family and the leader of Sinn Fein. September 29, 2015:

Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecutio­n Service confirms Adams and six others will not be prosecuted in connection with the murder of Jean Mcconville.

March 16, 2016: The US Secret Service apologises for denying Adams entry to a St Patrick’s Day reception at the White House, blaming the mix-up on an administra­tive error.

September, 2016: Adams says Sinn Fein “have a plan” for his departure. November 18, 2017:

Announces he won’t stand in next election.
