IN-FORM HITMAN OFF INJURED AND FACING DISCIPLINARY ACTION

-

Collin Quaner’s strike needed a good block from Steven Davis to turn it over.

Minutes later, Southampton had the lead when Wesley Hoedt headed on James Ward-prowse’s corner and there was Austin, coming in at the far post, to head home.

It wasn’t exactly a beauty but Austin’s next major contribution was beastly as he collided with Lossl.

All credit to the keeper, who dusted himself down and saved bravely at the feet of Dusan Tadic soon after play resumed.

Good work by Nathan Redmond set up Austin with a great chance to double Southampton’s lead after the break but he dragged his shot wide.

Huddersfield made Austin pay for the miss soon after when substitute Tommy Smith crossed for Laurent Depoitre to head home the leveller and when Austin had another shot he injured himself and had to go off.

In the closing moments, and with Saints’ efforts getting more desperate, Maya Yoshida had a very good chance. His header hit a post, then rebounded onto Lossl and bounced away to safety. A deserved lucky break for the keeper who had a very good, and eventful game.

Jeers rang out from the home support at full-time, disappointed that their team had let slip a lead against the Premier League newcomers. Southampton have now won just one out of their last 10 topflight games and have failed to keep a clean sheet during that miserable run. Pellegrino’s side have slipped to 13th, just three points from the relegation zone. Pellegrino said: “We will analyse things in the next few days. It is not good for Charlie and we lose our top scorer and an important player. “The game was a little bit flat because both teams were trying to press and the ball was more in the air and there were challenges going in. It was a pity we were close to a second goal and to concede was really painful. “We knew Huddersfield were good in the crossing situation, they have big players and the cross was flat between the defenders. We had to go forward, keep going and keep pushing and every point in the Premier League is difficult.” Asked if Virgil van Dijk had played his last game for the club, Pellegrino said: “I don’t know. “There will be a lot of speculation about him. We have to wait.”
