The 34-year-old added: “The kitchen wasn’t a considerat­ion when buying the house as I’m a rubbish chef, but mam tells me it’s very good for cooking in.

“I live here with my girlfriend Aoife. We went out for years when we were in college but then we broke up for about seven or eight years and then we rekindled when we came back to Ireland. She’s come along and put loads of lovely sprinkles on things – it’s a cliche but it’s made the house feel like a home. Judges check out the house My bedroom leads into a walk-in wardrobe, so I’ve commandeer­ed that.

“The thing is I’ve never had that before, I’ve always lived in small, pokey places.

“So it is an outrageous luxury and I will never get tired of it.”

Aoife, a trainee doctor based at Tallaght Hospital, has the spare bedroom as her personal dressing room.

Design legend Hugh Wallace gave the property his seal of approval.

He said: “You get a sense of a young couple here and that they’re starting their journey together.”

Celebrity Home of the Year is on RTE One on Tuesday at 9.35pm.
