Cows on moove across sea

- BY LYNNE KELLEHER

A SEA-LOVING herd of cows are stopping traffic on the west coast as they cross through waters to get to fresh pastures.

The sight has passers-by doing double takes but it is simply 70 animals mooving across a knee-high channel to get to grazing ground on an island which is part of their fragmented farm in Co Clare.

The herd, which features on this week’s Ear To The Ground, take the plunge around four times a year when they brave the cold waters on the shores of Galway Bay.

Padraig Fahy explains how they have been bringing their cattle across water for five generations on their family farm in New Quay. He said: “It’s amazing when our cows are going across the water everyone stops up and they are flabbergasted.”

Ear To The Ground airs on Thursday on RTE One at 8.30pm.
