ICE WEATHER WE’RE HAVING
At -5C it’s colder than Reykjavik & Moscow
IRELAND is bracing itself for more freezing weather after temperatures plummeted to -5C last night – even colder than Iceland.
Forecasters warned bitter air from Scandinavia is set to sweep the country over the coming days.
The Arctic blast will bring widespread frost as well as patches of ice and freezing fog.
Even in Iceland, on the edge of the Arctic Circle, the mercury is stuck at -3C while in Moscow the lowest temperature will be -4C tonight.
Met Eireann says daytime temperatures today will hover just above freezing before plunging into minus figures overnight. They issued a status yellow weather warning for low temperatures last night, which remains in place until 12 noon today. All of Munster and Connacht, as well as Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal are affected.
A forecaster said: “Turning very cold on Saturday night with lowest temperatures falling to between -2C and -5C and staying very cold Sunday morning.”
Today will be dry and sunny but very cold with temperatures only rising to between 2C to 5C.
Frost could even linger into the afternoon, especially in parts of Connacht and Ulster.
Overnight, the frost will become widespread with icy stretches and patches of freezing fog.
