Cash woes wrecking Black Cats

- BY CLIVE HETHERINGTON

JOHN O’SHEA believes Sunderland’s lack of spending has accelerated their dramatic demise.

Boss Chris Coleman, who replaced sacked Simon Grayson in November, is desperately trying to strengthen his squad on a meagre budget.

The Black Cats face a second successive relegation – after losing 4-0 to Cardiff yesterday and still bottom of the league – and owner Ellis Short has come under fire from fans for not spending.

Skipper O’shea, who signed a one-year contract extension in the summer, said: “I’m not saying money would solve everything, but it definitely would have helped.

“We still feel we should be higher in the table, but it’s definitely a competitive league. The amount being spent in the Championship shows that.”

O’shea, 36, won’t consider his future until the club’s fate is assured.

He stressed: “We have to make sure Sunderland are in the Championship and then I will worry about things after that.”
