‘VAR here for good’

- BY RICHARD EDWARDS

THE use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) has been backed to go from a trickle to a flood.

The technology had its first full run-out in the FA Cup as Brighton beat bitter rivals Crystal Palace.

It was then used in the League Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge and will be put under further scrutiny in this week’s FA Cup replays.

IFAB technical director David Elleray said: “A growing number of football countries are part of the experiment or have an interest in using VAR.

“Just as it an accepted part of rugby, tennis, cricket and American football, it is likely to become part of football.”
