Men perished in river ambush
On November 8, 1960, an 11-man section from the Irish 33rd Battalion arrived at a bridge over the Luweyeye River. Clearing a blockade, some 100 Baluba tribesmen armed with bows, poisontipped arrows, spears, clubs and guns attacked. In the fighting that followed, eight of the 11 men were killed. A ninth was killed later. Some of the dead were buried at Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, right.
