HALFPENNY PUTS

- BY GRAHAM THOMAS

LEIGH HALFPENNY rolled back the years – five of them – as Wales slapped a glove across Eddie Jones’s face before next week’s duel with England at Twickenham.

Halfpenny had not scored a try for his country since 2013, but the full-back proved he has rediscovered his mojo by crossing twice, in a record personal Test tally of 24 points.

The Lions full-back nailed six kicks from six attempts and with Gareth Davies and Steff Evans also helping themselves to tries, it meant a happy 50th victory in charge for Wales coach Warren Gatland.

“To me, Leigh Halfpenny is the best defensive full-back in the world,” said Gatland. “His work-rate is absolutely phenomenal. But it’s so pleasing to see him get some confidence from an attacking perspective.

“We expected to win and to win comfortably, and we can get better before next week.

“We have had lots of success at Twickenham in the last 10 years and we are looking forward to going there.”
