Lenny’s an inspiration for Murty
Ayr United v Rangers Today, 2.30pm
IT’S been 12 months since Graeme Murty was first appointed Rangers manager after Mark Warburton was axed on February 10 2017.
In an amazingly frank assessment of the weaknesses and fears that engulfed his first game in charge of Rangers, the 43-year-old says he will celebrate his anniversary in the knowledge he’s come a million miles in his own mind as a boss.
But he also confesses that some of his insecurities still need work – and that Neil Lennon’s inspiration is helping him get there.
He said: “It’s been an unbelievable year. I was more confident how I was going to put it over the second time. First time, I was far too interested in appeasing people.
“But I’m still guilty of overthinking everything. I’m hard on myself, still selfcritical. I need to park that, get over myself and move on.
“This is going to sound left-field, but perhaps the best person to talk to about it would be Neil Lennon.
“As a young manager his first job was to take charge of those guys across the city. And he had to do all of his developing, all of his learning, all of his growth in the public eye at am massive club.
“And look where he is now.
“I’ve no doubt that in the moment he found everything overwhelming – and sometimes I do but this experience will help me evolve into a far more polished practitioner than I am just now.”
