How on earth do I choose right soil?

What is the ideal soil type? Sally Land, Kent DAVID: Beautiful gardens can be made in any soil. But most gardeners would choose a soil that is moist but welldrained, and a well-balanced mix of clay, sand and humus.

That kind of soil is easy to work with and suits most plants. However there are always ways to improve your soil, and always plants that can work with it.
