Murty to get down and dirty

- BY GORDON WADDELL

Hamilton Academical v Rangers, today, 2.15pm

GRAEME MURTY admits Rangers must find a nasty streak if he is to stay in charge beyond the summer.

The Ibrox boss has impressed since being given the post until the end of the season. But asked how he can win a permanent role, he said: “We’re in a results-based business.

“I can be a nice guy and improve the atmosphere, have a happy squad and be really inclusive, make sure the guys are gelling and get some good results.

“But this club, more than any other, is based on results. I want to win. I want to make it impossible for people to ignore me.

“You do that by winning, by being maybe steely-eyed and a bit nasty.

“Sometimes you have to win 1-0 and it has to be horrible, scruffy and nasty.”

Despite the uncertainty over Murty’s future, he’s still working for Rangers’ long-term benefit, helping to identify new recruits and who deserves a fresh deal.

He said: “Although I may not reap the benefits, I’m excited about what we’re trying to do.

“The fact that somebody like James Tavernier, who has been the outstanding performer in his position in Scotland this season, would tie himself to the club has to be a real positive, not only for myself but also Rangers.”

Murty takes his squad to Hamilton today and hopes Accies old boy Greg Docherty can help them avenge a shock Ibrox defeat in November.

He said: “We did an analysis on Accies – it was the Greg Docherty show!

“We now have Greg in the building so we’ll quiz him quite closely.”
