Wanyama insists Tottenham will be just as focused on League One minnows as they were on Euro giants they faced in Champions League

goals down inside 10 minutes to draw 2-2 with Italian giants Juventus.

It was right up there with the performance they put in against Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage in November, when they beat Zinedine Zidane’s side 3-1 at Wembley.

But Wanyama knows that they cannot afford to underestimate Rochdale today just because they are two divisions below and do not have players at Spotland who can compare with the famous names plying their trades at the Bernabeu and the Allianz Stadium.

Asked if it’s difficult to get ‘up’ for games such as these, straight after a match against Juventus, Wanyama said: “The small games are always tough.

“The teams want to prove they can be on the same level as you and they fight, so we need to be at our best. These teams are physically good sides and they want to give everything so we have to be fully focused to pass the test.

“But the mentality of everyone at the club is to go and do well.

“Everyone wants to fight for each other and get some good results.”

Wanyama, linked this week with a summer move to Liverpool, has fought his way back into the Tottenham side, following a four-month lay-off with a knee injury.

And he confirmed that his comeback is complete with a spectacular strike against Liverpool at Anfield a fortnight ago.

Like those old FA Cup semis and finals, footage of the goal was hot viewing in his homeland of Kenya.

Wanyama said: “I got a lot of texts from people telling me how good a goal it was. “I really appreciate that and the support I have back home is huge.

“After the game I watched it a few times but I didn’t want to watch it too often because I don’t like to be carried away, and I don’t like to only live for that moment.

“I need to keep going and then hopefully I can get another goal like that.”

Rochdale, like Juve, will be hoping that next one doesn’t come any time soon.
