31-yr-old held after man found ‘beaten’

IRISH eyes were smiling last night as we kept our rugby Grand Slam title hopes alive.

The crowd inside the Aviva Stadium yesterday breathed a sigh of relief after Ulster’s Jacob Stockdale’s intercept try secured a 37-27 win over Wales.

Fans partied long into the night after a pulsating match which went right to the wire.

Now the scrum is building for tickets to Ireland’s final two games against Scotland and England.

The 20-year-old was discovered at a house in Connolly Street in Sligo town in the early afternoon.

It is claimed he was assaulted with a wheel brace.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested and is being held at Ballymote Garda station.

Locals said the area was sealed off while gardai carried out a full technical examinatio­n following the incident.

Emergency services rushed to the scene Supporters before kick-off and asked motorists to avoid the area. A Garda spokesman said: “Garda at Sligo are investigat­ing all the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the discovery of the body of a 20-year-old man this afternoon.

“Gardai were called to the scene of an incident in a house at Connolly Street, Sligo, at approximat­ely 1.30pm. A man who Anita Nolan and Cora Whooley investigat­ing gardai believe was the victim of an assault was pronounced dead at the scene. The office of the state pathologis­t has been notified and a Garda technical team are currently at the scene.

“A 31-year-old man was arrested a short time later in connection with this investigat­ion and is currently detained at Ballymote Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this assault or anyone with informatio­n to contact Sligo Garda station on 071-9157000.”
