Send plastic packing says shopper poll

- BY STEPHEN HAYWARD

MOST shoppers are trying to chuck out less plastic to help save the planet – but think food and drink firms should be leading the way.

In a survey of 5,000 people, more than 60 per cent said they are attempting to reduce their plastic waste. But 42 per cent think the food and drink industry should prioritise using packaging that is recyclable.

And more than 20 per cent want it to stop using plastic altogether.

The survey for Grocer magazine comes after the BBC’S documentary Blue Planet II, which included scenes of birds feeding chicks plastic dumped in the sea. Nearly 25 per cent of shoppers polled expressed “extreme concern” about the packaging problem.
