Motorists warned road risk not yet in rearview

- BY CILLIAN O’BRIEN and DAVID COLEMAN

MOTORISTS have been advised to take extreme care as some roads remain treacherous.

Storm Emma dumped up to three feet of snow in just a few hours, with its strong winds bringing devastating blizzards.

The Road Safety Authority advised motorists not to be lulled into a false sense of security after Met Eireann’s Red Alert was downgraded to orange yesterday.

Some routes are still impassable, with many people unable to get outside their estates.

But most major roads are open and the RSA issued advice:

SLOW

Remove all snow from the vehicle before starting In snow and icy conditions slow down, use all controls delicately and leave extra distance between your car and the vehicle in front Clear windows and mirrors before setting out, use a screen scraper and de-icer Do not use hot water on the windscreen as it can crack the glass Avoid over-steering, harsh braking and sudden acceleration Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin Select a low gear when travelling downhill, especially if through bends, and For more advice on severe weather driving tips and updates, please see advice on the RSA website or check their Facebook and Twitter pages.
