CJ flops in start blooper

- BY ALEX SPINK

BRITISH champion CJ Ujah blew his chance of a World Indoor medal by falsestarting last night.

The Londoner had been expected to medal in the men’s 60m but jumped the gun in his semi-final.

It was his second major disqualification having also falsestarted in the 2015 European Indoor final in Prague.

To add to the 23-year-old’s misery, he had sacrificed a place in the Commonwealth Games in Australia to compete in Birmingham.

Britain’s relay teams powered into today’s 4x400m finals – inspired by golden oldie Kriss Akabusi.

The women’s quartet of Amy Allcock, Anyika Onuora, Hannah Williams and Meghan Beesley qualified fifth fastest in a season’s best 3:32.57.

The men’s team of Owen Smith, Seb Rodger, Jamal Rhoden-stevens and Grant Plenderleith finished second in their heat behind USA in 3:05.29 — the fourth-best time ever by a GB team indoors.

Rhoden-stevens revealed Akabusi’s legendary anchor leg to win the 1991 world title in Tokyo had been their motivation.

“Looking back I remember watching Kriss and those guys,” he said.

“Every time we put out a team we are competitive.”

Shelayna Oskanclarke (800m) and Jake Wightman (1500m) both won their heats to make today’s finals.
