Irishman killed after being struck by car in England

AN Irishman has died after a road crash in England, it emerged yesterday.

Offaly man William Corrigan, 38, was originally from Birr but was living in Bedford.

Mr Corrigan was hit by a car in Bedford on Wednesday afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was married with children and had been living there for several years.

His family paid tribute, saying: “William Joseph was a loving husband, dad, son and brother.

“He loved his music and was a gifted banjo player.

“He was hugely popular in the local area and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”

The local community in Birr were shocked at his death.

Investigat­ing Bedfordshi­re Police officer Sergeant Paul Stanbridge said: “I’m appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who saw the vehicle in the area before, or after, the collision to get in touch to help us establish what happened.

“It is a tragedy when someone loses their life as a result of a collision and our thoughts are with Mr Corrigan’s family at this time.”

A man has been charged in connection with the incident and appeared in court on Friday.
