Heat oven to 180C (350F/gas 4) and liberally grease donut tin with butter.

Beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add flour, cocoa, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt, then mix. Stir in paste, buttermilk and eggs. Beat. Pour mix into tins, filling to two-thirds. Bake for 10–12 mins until a skewer pulls out clean. Cool then transfer to wire rack.

Melt butter and sugar in a pan on gentle heat. It gets hot so be careful.

Add cream and salt. Stir on heat until left with a gloopy mixture. Cool 2-3 hours.
