Anxiety disorder can exacerbate sleeping problems. Mind coach and TV presenter Anna Williamson’s tips can help: Remember you’re not alone: Being awake when it seems everyone else is asleep can feel lonely. But it isn’t just you! Choose a bedtime: You might not have kept to one since you were a child, but it’s helpful to create a routine. Ban technology: Phones, tablets and laptops all stimulate the mind and therefore hinder sleep taking over. Reduce anxiety and stress: Start a bedtime routine. Get a to-do list: Write down whirling thoughts.

Listen to music: Choose something relaxing and calming to promote positive, anxiety-free feelings. Breathe: When we’re anxious we don’t breathe properly. Avoid alcohol and caffeine: Anxiety’s nemesis... keep clear of all stimulants.

Do something boring: If you can’t sleep or you wake up and can’t get back to sleep, don’t reward your brain by watching a gripping TV show – pick a really boring task.

Exercise: This is proven to help promote sleep and endorphins (happy chemicals which reduce anxiety).
