GET ON BOARD

-

A cruise ship has crashed into a pier on the island of Roatan in Honduras. Video shot by dockside onlookers in the Central American nation shows the 902ft MSC Armonia colliding with the wharf and then using her bow thrusters to move away.

The clip showed that as the 65,542 gross tonnage, 2,679-passenger ship approached the pier her port anchor had been lowered into the water. It’s likely the starboard one would also have been deployed as “emergency brakes” if a technical issue was preventing the vessel from slowing down normally.

An MSC statement said: ‘’While manoeuvring alongside, for reasons that are currently still being investigated, the ship deviated from her course and grazed the end of the pier. There was never any risk for guests or crew on board.”

Armonia is homeporting in Havana, for seven to 14-day Caribbean itineraries.
