Coleman will take pay cut

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

SUNDERLAND boss Chris Coleman is ready to rip up his £800,000-ayear contract to remain at the club in League One.

The former Wales boss is determined to mount an immediate promotion push and get back into the Championship even if it means taking a substantial pay cut.

Coleman replaced Simon Grayson at the Stadium of Light in November but failed to halt the slide from the Premier League to League One in two seasons.

While the players have contracts which mean they take a 40 per cent drop in their salaries following a second relegation, Coleman’s two-and-a-half year deal didn’t contain the same clause.

But he will voluntarily take a drop in wages if it means being able to stay on Wearside and he is also ready to waive any compensation should Black Cats owner Ellis Short decide to go for a new manager.
