The Craftsman Sharon Bolton Trapeze. Out Thursday
It doesn’t get much creepier than a serial killer with a penchant for burying teenagers alive. Thirty years on, Florence Lovelady returns to the rural Lancashire town where, as a young WPC, she put away undertaker Larry Glassbrook. But once the coffin maker is himself in the ground, spooky goings raise suspicions that the real killer is still at large. Switching back to a vividly conjured 1969 (the brutal sexism meted out to Florence is particularly well depicted), this beautifully written story, which includes a richly woven seam of witchcraft and folklore, will keep you up at night.
