Gabrielle: My fury at Meryl

Actress ‘silent’ on Weinstein

-

It’s been a big year for women with the emergence of the Time’s Up and Me Too movements. But singer Gabrielle has blasted A-listers such as Meryl Streep for not exposing disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The 48-year-old tells me: “It is sad it has taken so long. Some of these women are so powerful... I find it very surprising it has taken until now.

“It’s sad so many people knew about the likes of Harvey Weinstein, and perpetrators who go around molesting and raping women and getting away with it. Powerful women have probably been aware of powerful men and are happy to hold their corner and not say a word. Shame on all those women who did know. If I was as powerful as Meryl Streep I’d have been shouting from the rooftops.” Actress Meryl, 68, has denied knowing about Weinstein’s behaviour. He has been accused of molesting or raping about 80 women. Gabrielle, who has a brilliant new album Under My Skin, says she wishes she had been as vocal as Taylor Swift, who took DJ David Mueller to court last year for groping her. She adds: “Someone thought it was OK to slap me on the bum. “He was an older guy. I wish I had been like Taylor. If it was now I would have stood my own, but I was younger then.”
