HEARTACHE AS WOMAN DIES IN A CHURCHYARD

Archdeacon calls on leaders to take action & prevent homeless deaths Darkness Into Light walk tackles suicide

People raised money to help fund prevention and also used the occasion to by the sad and tragic death of a young woman in the early hours of this morning. My thoughts and prayers and those of our entire parish community are with this young woman’s family. “I am conscious the graveyard at the back of St Michan’s has been used as a relatively safe haven for some of our city’s homeless people, however, unfortunat­ely it Denise Loftos and Elaine Bias remember loved ones. Pieta House’s Darkness Into Light walk saw people come together in 180 venues across the country yesterday with participan­ts being greeted by a flourishin­g sunrise.

The walk has seen a huge growth in support since it began in 2008. St Michan’s, Dublin has also been the place where drug addicts congregate.

“In today’s society when so much is being spoken about homelessne­ss, it would appear that yet again talk has not turned action.

“The needless and senseless death of this young woman is a tragedy Candlelit tribute into which cannot be ignored and every assistance by local and national authoritie­s must be given to support people who find themselves in difficult circumstan­ces.”

The Archbishop of Dublin Michael Jackson also spoke of his sadness at the “tragic” death at the well-known building on Church Street.

He said: “I also wish to voice the sympathy of the Church of Ireland community in Dublin to all those close to her and to whom she meant a great deal as a person, a friend and a family member.

“May she rest in peace and may those who mourn her loss be comforted in their distress.”

The woman’s body was taken to the city morgue for a postmortem. Gardai said the investigat­ion is ongoing though foul play is not suspected.
