Dozens were wounded but violence is set to escalate when America’s new Israeli embassy opens in Jerusalem tomorrow.
US President Donald Trump’s historic decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed city has enraged the Arab world. But Israelis are ecstatic and hundreds of official signs proclaiming “Trump is a friend of Zion” and “Trump make Israel Great” hang next to US flags.
Mr Trump will make a speech by video from the White House as his daughter Ivanka and 40 congressmen attend the opening ceremony.
Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat said: “I thank Donald Trump. Jerusalem is the Jewish nation’s eternal capital and now the world is beginning to recognise that.”
The Israeli military expects 100,000 Palestinians to attempt a mass storming of its Gaza security fence tomorrow.
Israel closed the Kerem Shalom border crossing yesterday after rioters torched a gas pipeline.
More than 40 Palestinians have been killed during six weeks of protests.
