‘Silly’ Sanches gets cross face from Carvalhal

- By GRAHAM THOMAS

RENATO SANCHES has acted “stupidly” and is still “a boy” according to outgoing Swansea City manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Nothing reflects the Swans’ miserable season more than the lack of impact made by Bayern Munich star Sanches, who cost a £7million loan fee.

The 20-year-old (inset, above) arrived with the reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting talents – but he will not figure in the club’s final game at home to Stoke where a 10-goal swing in relation to Southampton is needed to avoid relegation.

The Portugal midfielder will be best remembered for mistakenly passing to an advertising hoarding against Chelsea.

It will surprise no one that when he turned up at the club’s awards night at the Liberty Stadium, the doormen initially blocked his entry as they had no idea who he was.

But Sanches’ most jaw-dropping moment was the tweet he posted the morning after his team’s crunch midweek defeat by Southampton, informing the world of an exciting new Renato emoji – a picture of which he held next to his face. Carvalhal (inset, below) blamed his fellow countryman’s decision to hand over his social media to a hired hand.

He blasted: “When they put things not about football in someone else’s hands they think it’s a good thing.

“But they are doing one of the most stupid things in the world.

“I always tell players not to put social media in the hands of other people. You can give it to someone with experience who will know what to do, but many give it to their friends who can be stupid and create these situations.”

Sanches has looked like a lost child in 16 appearances with no goals and no assists.

That followed an anonymous first season at Bayern. Under the terms of his transfer from Benfica, he could cost the German champions £60m if he fulfils his potential.

Carvalhal reckons Sanches should return to Benfica and added: “He needs to go back to Portugal because he is a boy.

“He was not ready for the Bayern level although he has big potential.”

Carvalhal will join Sanches through the exit, even if he finishes by ending a disastrous eight-match winless streak.
