HOTEL of the week

THE TOWER HOTEL LONDON

-

WHERE AND WHY

Between Tower Bridge and St Katharine Docks marina, the four-star Guoman-owned property offers stunning views regardless of your choice of room. Following an effortless check-in, I found that my executive double room overlooking the Thames was bright and modern and conveyed a feeling of a luxury without being overbearing or fussy. All the mod cons you would expect from a four-star are there, including flatscreen TV, speedy wi-fi, minibar, a pristine bathroom replete with boutique toiletries and my very own Nespresso machine. Plus a welcome box of chocolate truffles, which I enjoyed as I settled in later that evening before bed.

ON THE MENU

The Tower’s Brasserie restaurant offers a wide, international menu with fine river views. After a simple but yummy vegetable soup, time for the main I’d already decided on at first glance: duo of Cornish lamb. The cuts of rump and braised belly were cooked to melt-in-the-mouth perfection, stylishly presented with wild garlic, Chantenay carrots and pea puree. For dessert, I opted for a sublime citron tart with mint sorbet, which though light was packed with flavour. Menu items from The Brasserie are individually priced, with three-course options starting from €30. Round off the evening with a nightcap in the intimate Xi bar. Breakfast is €13.50pp, for a choice of all the usual continental and cooked options.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

Everything the capital has to offer is within easy reach. But if you’re looking for something different from shopping on Regent Street or the theatres of the West End, The Tower Hotel is by a Thames Clipper river bus stop. Head east to visit the markets and restaurants of Greenwich or glide west to the South Bank’s art venues. For food lovers, Borough Market is a short walk, crammed with tasty stalls and charming bars. And the Tower of London is right on your doorstep! Prices start from €112 a night room-only for a standard room. Executive rooms start from €207 per night, which includes access to the Executive Club Lounge. guoman.com, 0044 0800 330 8005.
