“In the second half, we had trouble, they changed their formation a bit and we had a little bit of trouble early on.

“They scored and that always puts the pressure on. But we got used to it, stuck with it and saw the game out well.”

Cahill, whose goal was his fifth for England, added: “The first half was very good, we felt comfortabl­e, created chances and dominated.

“We lost a bit of concentrat­ion in the second half when we came back out, I know there were a lot of changes every few minutes, but that’s no excuse.

“After five or 10 minutes, we got to grips with their formation and managed the game well towards the end and saw the game out.”
