MY PRAYERS FOR KILLER MOTORIST

- BY OLIVIA KELLEHER

A WOMAN who lost her husband, son and unborn daughter after a horrific car crash has revealed she prays for the motorist who killed her family.

Elber and Con Twomey, from Cork, were in an accident while on holiday in Torquay, England, in July 2012.

The couple’s 16-month-old son Oisin was killed. Mrs Twomey was five months pregnant and doctors failed in their attempts to save her unborn child. Con died in hospital 10 months later.

The other driver, cabbie Marek Wojciechowski, 26, died in hospital. He was being chased by police and left a note.

Elber will pay tribute to her husband with a series of events. The Twomey memorial will be held on Con’s birthday on Saturday in Meelin and Rockchapel in Cork. It involves charity cycles, walks and a quiz.

Elber told Cork’s 96FM that after the tragedy she vowed to work to educate law officials on how to deal with suicidal motorists. UK police have changed their rules. Calling for training in Ireland, Elber said gardai dealing with suicidal motorists must “handle them with care”. She warned suicidal drivers are not bank robbers and need to be treated differently, adding: “While you can’t predict what the poor suicidal soul will do, the least the guard is entitled to is to have some level of training.” Elber said she began to include Marek in her prayers. She added: “I was lighting candles for the holy souls and I lit a candle for Marek. “It was the best thing I ever did. I will pray for him every day of my life.” For more on the “Remorial” weekend, visit www.facebook.com/ Twomey Family Remorialweekend.
