Soul lovers mourn Blues Brother Matt

‘Guitar’ Murphy BLUES Brothers Band star Matt “Guitar” Murphy has died aged 88.

His nephew Floyd Murphy Jnr said in tribute: “He poured his heart out in every guitar solo he did.”

He found fame in the Blues Brothers movies alongside Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi.

Matt played the husband of cafe owner Aretha Franklin, who nagged him about joining the band.

He was in the 1980 original and 1998 followup, Blues Brothers 2000.

He also played in the spin-off band and on its top 20 hit Soul Man.

Matt, who died in Miami, played with Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters.

Spinal Tap’s Michael Mckean called him “one of those play-all-night guys rock ’n’ roll is made of ”.
