I New York in the 1980s...

Fashion fans keep looking for retro tips

-

FASHION loves a good trip down retro-road and for autumn winter 2018 many designers looked back to the 1980s for their new collections.

In New York everyone from Tom Ford to Marc Jacobs paraded models in bold shoulders and 80s-hued colour blocking, while executive power-dressing ruled at Alexander Wang.

The trend also swept the catwalks at Milan and Paris – think puffball dresses, neon brights, huge sleeves and statement jewellery.

The glamorous decade was in full swing at Miu Miu who showcased acid washed jeans and soft leather jackets in 80s silhouettes. Foil fabrics and glammed-up evening looks also added to the overarching idea of excess.

Top high street fashion store River Island have been quick off the mark with their new AW18 collection that has fully embraced the decade but given it a modern twist. There’s a nod to Madonna’s True Blue era with the furry blue Coat (€127) teamed with blazer (€87), jeans (€60) and pearl necklace, €60.

Other highlights from the new range include super cool bodycon dresses, wild clashing animal prints, check and patent coats.

We predict the slouch and thigh high boots will be a big hit with customers too as the autumn temperatures start creeping in.

Meanwhile, it’s go big or go home with statement accessories. Think oversized baker boy hats, disc earrings and dazzling leather gloves completing the collection.
