Liam: Make sure you’re Taken care while swimming

- BY AILBHE DALY

AS temperatures continue to soar around the country, sunseekers are being warned of the dangers in taking a dip to cool off.

Hollywood star Liam Neeson has teamed up with Irish Water Safety and warned of the risks.

The Taken star, from Ballymena in Co Antrim, warned “water hides dangers” in the new campaign.

He said: “When summer comes, water calls. Lakes, rivers and beautiful beaches. Joy, freedom, fun.

“But water hides dangers – rip currents, cold water shock, slippery rocks, unexpected depths. “In seconds, water can steal a life.” Speaking in Irish Water Safety’s National Drowning Prevention Strategy, Minister Michael Ring urges people to talk about water safety.

He said: “By making water safety a part of the conversation, we make it part of our culture.

“I believe that will have huge benefits for us all.”

On average 133 people die from drowning in Ireland every year.

The death toll is more than two-thirds of that on our roads.
