‘KEEP ON WINGING’

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

FORMER England defender Wayne Bridge knows that few things frighten full-backs more than wingers with pace. Which is why he wants to see Jesse Lingard, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford running at their markers. Bridge, who won 36 England caps, said: “Get at your full-back straight away and take them on. If you get the better of your full-back straight away, then the one thing you will know is that he is going to be dreading the next 90 minutes. “As a defender, you’re thinking you want to win your one-on-one battles, then you also want to help your team out. “But if the full-back is having a bad day, just keep giving it to the winger – because it only takes getting the better of him once to create a chance and score a goal. “And, if it keeps happening, you just have to keep giving him the ball and letting him do his thing. “The wingers we’re talking about are quick, skilful, exciting players and they shouldn’t be afraid of any full-back. “They look like they’re having fun, and, if it’s like that every game, then they shouldn’t be afraid of anyone.” Having won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2004/05, and the FA Cup and League Cup double a year later, Bridge has enjoyed the highs. But he knows how vulnerable full-backs can feel, particularly if they’re operating behind certain mercurial Brazilians, as Bridge did at Manchester City. He added: “Full-backs can be isolated out there on their own. [With City] if I had Robinho there, I wasn’t going to get any help at all!” Wayne Bridge was appearing on Paddy Power’s Facebook show Paddy’s Boat Party. Watch the next episode tonight at 6pm.
