Dubs have Done it again

Gavin demands better for visit to Hands

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

NIALL SCULLY showed Dublin how it’s done last night - as Blues boss Jim Gavin admitted he had serious food for thought after an opening Super 8s win at Croke Park.

Scully scored a brace either side of half-time but, after Tyrone’s impressive 4-24 to 2-12 victory over Roscommon, Gavin (below) was unhappy that another four goal chances went awry. The Blues meet the Red Hands on Saturday at Healy Park in Omagh. And Gavin moaned: “The chances that we had, that we didn’t convert, is disappointing particularly when we spend most of our practice sessions

going after the skills of the game - shooting for points and goals.

“The next day which we have against Tyrone, that won’t be good enough. After today’s result, it’s 7-44 they have put up in two games.

“We will need to be putting up scores at the other end. That gives us something to reflect upon, it won’t be good enough. That is, I suppose, a disappointing thing.”

But Gavin hailed the performance of Scully, whose 26th minute goal brought daylight between the sides after a close-fought opening and his strike just after half-time put the Dubs in the driving seat. “That was great to see,” said the Blues supremo, who described the three changes made to his backline as “tactical”.

“I suppose Niall showed the rest of the guys that’s how it should be done. So hats off to him.

“Great moves, absolutely great, to create the goal chances for him, and yeah, expertly finished so well done to him.”

Meanwhile Donegal boss Declan Bonner believes his side could have done better despite being in the contest to the end.

“I just felt there was more in us, maybe it was that belief just to get over the line against Dublin,” said Bonner.

“Maybe sometimes teams just don’t perform like they should, maybe show too much respect at times but you’re playing against a real quality Dublin side.

“It was probably Dublin’s first real test of the year, they’ve been winning their matches out of sight and then we probably provided a different challenge.”
