What are you doing... what have you done?

»Screams heard from inside attack house Man held as 74-year-old killed on birthday

- BY EMMA MCMENAMY

A MAN was allegedly battered to death in a suspected domestic dispute after someone could be heard screaming: “What are you doing?”

The 74-year-old widower, who has been named locally as Anthony Timms, died following an apparent row at a house in Rowlagh Green in Clondalkin, West Dublin, on Friday night.

Gardai were called to the scene shortly after 8.45pm where Mr Timms was found with serious head injuries.

HOSPITAL

He was pronounced dead a short time later at Tallaght Hospital.

A 47-year-old man has been arrested and is being quizzed at Lucan Garda station.

One local, who did not wish to be named, said shouting could be heard coming from the house shortly before gardai arrived.

The witness said: “Tony had been drinking over in the local pub. It was his 74th birthday. There was screaming coming from the house, a voice saying, ‘What have you done?’

“One of the neighbours I think ran in and found Tony badly injured. He had really bad injuries to his head.”

Locals living in the cul-de-sac were shocked to hear the news yesterday morning.

One neighbour said it’s a very quiet area with the vast majority of those living on the street being elderly. He said: “It’s very sad to see something like this happening.

TRAGIC

There’s never any trouble here. People heard a bit of noise last night when the guards were arriving but apart from that nobody knew he had died until this morning.” Another neighbour said: “There was a lot of noise at around 8pm or so. I think he had been over having a drink earlier in the evening.

“He had emphysema so didn’t get out much. It’s very tragic. This area is very quiet. You never get any trouble around here. Its a quiet cul-de-sac.”

Gardai confirmed they were called called to a house to deal with a “domestic dispute” at around 8.30pm on Friday.

A spokesman said: “At approximately 8.45pm gardai in Ronanstown were called to a house at Rowlagh Green where a male had been injured.

“On arrival a 74-year-old male was discovered with serious injuries. It is believed there was an earlier domestic dispute at the house. The injured male was taken to Tallaght Hospital and later pronounced dead.

“A postmortem is scheduled to be carried out today by the State Pathologists Office at the City Mortuary.”

PRISON officers are being scalded, bitten, battered and stabbed as they try to keep order in the country’s jails.

Figures released show staff suffered a shocking litany of 362 injuries in the line of duty within the space of 12 months.

Officers sustained broken bones, smashed teeth, puncture wounds from syringes, burns, prolapsed discs and whiplash as they came under attack from inmates.

Jail chiefs blame the surge in violence on inter-gang disputes – as they try to keep 19 warring factions apart in Mountjoy alone.

They have called for greater segregation among feuding cons and some believe the rule of law in prisons has now gone out the window.

Strict new security arrangements have been implemented in Mountjoy where members of the Kinahan cartel and other high-profile criminals are housed.

The Dublin jail is on virtual lockdown from 8pm to 8am with new regimes in place for entering and exiting the security gates.

But officers, who have to contend with a level of lawlessness never before witnessed behind bars, say it is not enough.

Their calls should be heeded – and sooner rather than later.

How bad does it have to get before those protecting law and order are given adequate protection?
