Pothole kills cycle mum thrown 60ft along road

- BY YASMIN HARISHA

Cyclist Carolyn A MUM who was thrown 60ft from her bike while riding over a 6ft-wide pothole has died.

Carolyn Dumbleton, 52, broke her spine and went into cardiac arrest.

She was put into an induced coma but taken off life support after five days when scan results showed no brain activity.

Daughter Samantha, 25, cradled Carolyn as her life ebbed away and wrote on Facebook: “I held her close till the very end and told her to be brave, that it was okay, she could rest now.

“Mum’s organs are being donated and she is saving lives. That makes her a hero. I love you, Mum, always... don’t worry, I got things from here.”

Carolyn, from Lincoln, was riding downhill when she hit the crater in the village of Cromford, Derbys. Drivers stopped to help and Carolyn was airlifted to hospital. But her brain had been starved of oxygen for too long.

The hole has since been filled. Derbyshire County Council said: “Our thoughts are with Mrs Dumbleton and her family. We’re in discussion with police about the accident.”
