His plans were not legally binding and his family including his ex wife Jane Laurie were in charge of the final arrangemen­ts. Leslie split from actress Jane in 2013 after 31 years together. The couple had three sons. After a messy divorce Leslie revealed he was homeless but later bought a flat in Bulgaria and found love with a local woman. He returned to the UK as cancer ravaged his body.

Leslie played the Albert Square rogue Dirty Den from 1985 to 1989. He made a surprise return to the soap in September 2003. The reappearan­ce of his character was an immediate ratings hit, with 16 million viewers tuning in to watch Den utter the words “Hello, princess” to his adopted daughter, Sharon.
