Murren and the Schilthorn is a fabulous day out. The “valley of waterfalls” is so named for the 72 that cascade down the sheer rock faces on either side where an ancient glacier carved out the valley. This part of the Bernese Oberland, dominated by the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, inspired JRR Tolkien, Lord Byron and Mendelssohn and has been a magnet for British tourists for more than 100 years.

It was a group of Brit skiers who persuaded train companies to run in the winter and kick off the first Alpine ski races. Rail is still the main mode of transport.

To access Wengen’s ski area you can take the Wengernalpbahn, the world’s longest rack and pinion railway. It climbs from Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg, in the shadow of Jungfrau, before descending into neighbouring Grindelwald.

The station is a few minutes Schilthorn restaurant
