A revolutionary wound-healing spray could spare thousands of patients the misery of amputations. Shyam Kolvekar, a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at St Bart’s Hospital, London, wants the product – called Youki, invented by Windsor scientist Sujata Jolly who was awarded the 2016 Medical Livewire Global Award for Innovation in Wound Healing for developing the bio-cell spray – made available where it could help combat problems caused by diabetic ulcers. They cost the NHS £1.3bn to treat and lead to 7,000 amputations a year. He said: “It forms a protective layer to keep out bacteria and prevents over-growth of granulation so the skin can pull together and the ulcer gets smaller with a better chance of healing.”
