LIVE FOR TODAY

- Running with terminal cancer by Kevin Webber

Have you ever been told that something’s not possible? Or “people like you” can’t do that?

Well I have lots of times over the last few years. Usually they are referring to me going off to compete in ultramarathons.

I was told that three years ago, when I said I was going to run a marathon on chemotherapy – so I ran two. Since then I have run thousands of miles in amazing places, including the Arctic and the Sahara.

Which brings me to today. You see, this time last year I couldn’t complete day four of a 230-kilometre race in Spain.

And right then I thought I may never have the chance to be there again to have another go because my longevity is never certain.

The easy thing to have done would have been to blame my health and give up, but in fact I did the opposite and have visualised finishing the race virtually every day for a year.

So now here I am again, on the eve of the fourth day of the Al Andalus Ultimate Trail. It’s been 40°C and I have already run 127 kilometres.

But tomorrow is my nemesis – 69 kilometres with 2,000 metres of mountains to climb in less than 12 hours.

Like most things in life, I have no idea if I will complete the day, but it won’t be without giving my all.

I hope you too never give up if it’s important to you. Whatever it is, shoot for the stars because you never know unless you try.

Until next week, Kev

It is very important to keep on trying and make sure you never give up on your dreams
