Becks hit by locals in Miami

- BY STEVE BRENNER

DAVID BECKHAM has been told to go back to the drawing board after his four-year quest to build a MLS stadium raised more angry questions than answers.

Becks made his way to Miami City Hall hoping new plans to build a 28,000-seater arena and sporting complex at the Melreese Country Club would get off the ground with no problems.

The Beckham United ownership group were hoping to win a vote so that legislation could potentially be changed in November and allow a no-contest bid for the public land, which includes a golf course.

But the former England skipper’s team were pulled apart by angry dissenters and local government officials.

A well-placed source groaned: ”These plans, just like the last ones, are totally up in the air. It’s a mess.”

The marathon meeting started at 2pm and finally ended at 10.30pm.

Before Beckham arrived, there was a three-and-a-half-hour procession of Miami residents who were each given two minutes to state their feelings over the project.

“This isn’t about soccer,“said one of the speakers. “This is about money and greed.”

Becks insists his team will begin playing in 2020 but it will have to be somewhere temporary like Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.
