Bleus with a 33/1 worldie

-

BET it’s 1966 again in today’s World Cup Final.

They thought it was all over and about bleedin’ time, too.

From ’66 on, the Big One has been one of the most reliably drawish and long-winded fixtures in international football.

Six of the last 13 finals were level on 90 minutes. Nine deadlocked at halftime. Two goals or fewer in normal time as well, more often than not.

The 4/1 ‘no goalscorer’ between France and Croatia (4pm) nails the vibe fair and square.

It won’t help this time that one side has all the legs but works best on the counter-attack.

The DRAW (90min) is the clear pick of the 1X2 prices, with France’s style potentially nullified. Be on at the general 9/4.

Best keep morale up with a couple of scorer bets. Les Bleus penalty taker Antoine Griezmann is a 5/4 ‘anytime’ poke for club and country this season. The 19/10 (Coral, Lads) ‘anytime’ is probably thin, but best of the likelier punts.

Longshot fans should split a stake on Raphael Varane (above) ‘first scorer’ at 33/1 and ‘anytime’ at 16/1 (both Bet365).

The old-fashioned virtues of some big lad planting his swede on it, in a befuddling set-piece ballet, are back at the cutting edge of football science, where they belong. Gareth Southgate, we salute you.

Now, put it in the mixer, Pierre!
