Martinez the cool ruler
THEIR World Cup campaigns stopped just short of the final but Roberto Martinez and Gareth Southgate lead the field in international management.
That’s the view of former Belgium boss Georges Leekens, who claims Martinez and his England counterpart represent the future of international coaching. Their calm approach contrasted with the excitable behaviour of the likes of Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli – and Leekens is confident their emergence has signalled the end of ranting and raving on the world stage.
“You look at the way that Southgate and Martinez have handled everything and it has been hugely impressive,” Leekens said.
“During the Brazil match, every little decision that Martinez made was perfect.
“And when England played Colombia in the last 16, Southgate was the coolest man in the ground.
“Compare that with some managers and it’s clear that their way is best.
“You can’t just shout at international footballers and expect results.”
