5 DANGERMEN

- BY NICK DOUGHERTY

TOMMY FLEETWOOD

He set a new course record at Carnoustie by carding a 63 in the Dunhill and has a good chance here. The pins may be in a more difficult position for The Open, but this is the same course and he’s just come away from returning a similar score from Shinnecock Hills last month. That’s very tidy. Everything really is set fair for Tommy.

DUSTIN JOHNSON

Top of the rankings – because he delivers consistently. If not winning, he’s still up there. Out of 12 finishes this season, he’s been in the top 10 eight times. He does well on links courses and is another who can change trajectory with the weather. Got to be in the reckoning.

JUSTIN ROSE

Comes into the reckoning and, having won two tournaments this season – including the Fort Worth International – is in good shape. Personally, if I was down to my last £10, I’d put it on him. He is such a consistent performer. As good, tee to green, as anyone out there. If he has one weakness, it’s his putting. But, on song, he’ll win Majors.

JON RAHM

Rahm, 23, is a big guy with a big game. The Spaniard has won three times on the European Tour. He is another who won’t be fazed by links golf. Part of the new breed of golfers emerging. If accurate off the tee and the conditions are in his favour, he has the armoury.

RORY MCILROY

Happier in himself now his life has changed. He’s married, with a young family and is coming to terms with that. He started the season well, particularly in the Middle East, and he’s had practice over in Ireland. Calmer conditions would favour him. He can deliver and could beat the field by three or four shots, if it comes together for him.
