Cliff plans a writ record
New album will feature lyrics inspired by BBC court battle
SIR Cliff Richard is set to open up about his long fight with the BBC in lyrics on a new album.
The LP, due to be released in time for Christmas, will include a track entitled Rise Up – which sources say was inspired by his court battle which ended last week. Cliff said afterwards: “I will be all right. I will survive it all. I’m not dead. I can be stronger because of this.”
A source close to the star said: “Cliff has worked really hard on what will be a very personal album. There is one song which focuses on what has happened to him over the past four years and how he got through it.” On Wednesday, the 77-year-old pop veteran won his privacy case over TV reporting of a police raid at his home in 2014 over unfounded historic sex allegations.
A High Court judge awarded him €235,000 in damages. The BBC is considering an appeal, and experts have warned the ruling has serious consequences for press freedom as it could now stop newspapers and media outlets identifying people being investigated for any crime until the point they are charged.
Despite the star’s High Court victory, friend Bruce Welch of The Shadows said: “His life is back on track. I’m absolutely delighted.
“But you can’t erase what’s gone on the last two or three years. It’s been really sad for him.”
