Running with terminal cancer

- by Kevin Webber

They say if at first you don’t succeed, then try, try, try again. Easier said than done, of course.

Last year I failed to complete stage four of the wonderful Al Andalus Ultimate Trail in Andalusia, Spain – a 230km event over five days.

It’s gruelling... day four involved a 69km run, a 6,000ft climb and roasting 40°C heat. This time was every bit as tough as I remember but my head was in a better place, I paced myself better on the three previous days – and I nailed it. I also finished the final race the next day and proved to myself you should never give up. I would recommend the 2019 Al Andalus Ultimate Trail to anyone who wants a fab challenge – have a look at alandalus-ut.com.

But it’s not all about me. The other, essential, reason I succeeded was because of the 20 or so unsung heroes, all volunteers, who crewed the checkpoints, moved the entire camp every day to the next finish, checked our health along the way, refilled our water bottles, marked the route across the scorching Spanish mountains – plus many other roles. Like most amateur sports, they only happen because of tireless volunteers. So today I want to thank them all. Believe me, the “athletes” all appreciate what you do but just don’t say thanks often enough.

I have been a volunteer in my time. It’s great fun and gives a sense of purpose. If you haven’t, why not offer your services to a local event? They welcome any help – no skills necessary.

Until next week,

I finished a five-day grueller in 40C heat... but it’s the army of volunteers who are the real heroes
